Among the new treatments that have been developed in the last years there is one that is particularly interesting and promising: the human hair-root-generating stem cells.
A group of researchers from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have been conducting a research in this field and have been able to convert adult cells into epithelial stem cells (EpSCs).
So far nobody has been able to produce enough quantities of these cells, and this group states that they have been the first to do this in both human subjects and the usual lab mice.
The group started his research using something called “ dermal fibroblasts”, which are real human skin cells, and they were able to transform them into pluripotent stem cells adding three genes.
The pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can change into any type of cell in our body, and the researches transformed them into epithelial stem cells, which are the ones that are normally found in hair roots and follicles.
During the experiments with mice, they implanted these EpSCs into mice, and the cells transformed into cells of hair follicles, and this gave really good hopes for regrowing hair in human patients.
The hair follicles that were gotten with this process were similar in structure to the human hair roots, and this was the very first time that a considerable amount of epithelial stem cells capable of generating hair follicles, has been made in sufficient quantity.
To complete the job the researchers now should be able to re-create also the adult stem cells that are found in the dermal papillae, at the base of the hair follicle.
Once this will be achieved, the full recreation of a complete hair follicle will be a reality and we will be a step closer to a complete regrowth of lost hair.
